DANGER, DANGER: Step Away From the Bib

I think I've mentioned before, my little girl has a severe case of baby bulimia. No matter what we try - different formulas, burping frequently, trying to slow down her feedings - nothing works.
On the bright side:

  • She doesn't have colic or acid reflux - she just does her business and smiles

  • Our pediatrician isn't concerned. She is gaining weight and has an almost insatiable appetite (typical girl)

Each time she tosses-her-cookies, often without any warning whatsoever, my DH or I sigh "Oh G!"

I've even threatened to buy a "Staples Easy Button" and reprogram it to say "Oh G!" - so we can press it each time before we start running around in a panicked fit looking for a burp cloth. (Murphy's Law - the baby only spits up when you don't have a burp cloth handy, or the one you have is already soaked through).

I've been using terry cloth bibs, but they don't catch all of the mess. So, this weekend, I made a special trip to the baby store to buy plastic molded bib with a "pocket" at the bottom to catch the runoff. What I didn't take into account is that she likes to play with her bib between sips of formula. So, instead of it running into her lap and on the floor, she up-ended her bib and dumped everything caught by the bib all over her head.

I don't know who laughed harder...her or me.

Have you moved up from Level 1 nipples? We switched to Level 2, and for a while Layla did fine. Then suddenly she started throwing up during every bottle. My DH thought to switch back to Level 1, and she quit throwing up. Recently we switched her back to Level 2 again, and so far so good. She still chokes as if she's trying to gulp too much formula, but the muscles in her throat have matured and no longer let her throw up as easily. She still spits up small amounts all the time though, despite zantac.

We are trying to recover from our own periodic demonic possession over here but it was clearly acid reflux. I wish I had better advice other than "keep calm and carry on changing the... clothes, sheets, etc"

Hi CCRM - thanks for the tip! We've been on Level 3 for awhile. We started on Level 1, then moved on to Level 2, but very quickly both Twinks were getting extremely frustrated because they were sucking and sucking and the formula wasn't coming fast enough - so after about 4 weeks we tried a Level 3 and that seemed to be just right. Maybe I should try to go back to Level 2 and see her reaction? Hadn't thought of that. However, she's been spitty since she was born - so not sure if slowing down would make a difference. It's almost as if she's conditioned now to where she forces herself. Poor baby. :(
